About GCSE maths tuition with Emma’s Maths Corner

Kind and patient teaching style

Creating a positive learning environment in which students feel safe emotionally is my biggest priority. Ask me questions, tell me when you don’t understand, try answering and get it wrong – it’s all part of the learning process.

Student-centric and personalised

My lessons are not only tailored to each student in terms of their mathematical ability but their individual goals and general learning needs too. No student is the same, so no tutoring experience should be the same!

Organised and syllabus-aligned

No student should feel out of touch with their own education. For this reason, each of my students possesses a personalised topic checklist and lesson schedule, providing a tangible indicator of their academic journey and a clear path forward.

While I was pretty good at it – achieving an A* at GCSE and an A at A-Level – I never much enjoyed maths at school.

The only reason I took maths at A-Level was so that I could study computer science at university, which I didn’t end up doing anyway! If you had told me that I would become a maths tutor when I was 22, I would have been shocked. Now, years later, I realise that I struggled from a lot of maths anxiety and a terrible lack of confidence – and, honestly, I think this experience makes me a better maths tutor! It allows me to relate to some of the barriers my students face.

After graduating with a first-class degree in philosophy from Lancaster University in 2023, I became a cook at a plant-based cafe and restaurant. I had a coworker whose daughter was leaving secondary school to become home educated, and when they found out that I had an A-Level in mathematics, they asked if I could support her in achieving her GCSE. I said ‘Yes’ and, well, the rest is history. When I revisited content that for years I had not so much as thought about, I realised how great maths is. I developed a fresh perspective on the subject, gaining insights and making connections I had not before! As a passionate vegan and massive foodie, I loved my job, but I dreamed of working for myself – so, after only a year as a cook, I left to start my career as a private maths tutor.

I have been working as a private maths tutor since October 2024. I support over a dozen students on a regular 1:1 basis, both in person and online, and many more through my small group sessions.

I work with students from Year 9 to Year 11, college students resitting their exams and home-educated students. I also have experience supporting students with special educational needs, including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and general learning disabilities.

My Approach to teaching GCSE maths

I tutor in the way that I wish I was taught at school.

I strive to create a judgement-free, supportive, and collaborative environment where my students feel comfortable enough to tell me when they don’t understand, have a question, or need more practice.

What’s important to me is that you put the effort in...

…not what you look like while doing it. I have students show up for their lessons, both in person and online, with their hair in rollers and with their pyjamas and spot cream on.

I work hard to give you the best support possible.

My priority is making both my students and their parents feel as though they’ve always got someone in their corner. Someone to help with their maths, yes, but also someone to be kind, patient, and supportive too.

  • Our son felt completely comfortable with Emma, which meant he was happy to ask questions and, importantly, happy to be challenged.

We really feel that this combination of encouragement, patience, and knowing when to push him is what made such a difference.

  • We can’t thank Emma enough.

Emma is friendly, this along with her clear and calm approach would really be great for anyone who may feel a bit scared of maths or even socially anxious.

  • Nothing has ever been too much trouble for Emma.

She marked my son’s past papers, worked through areas he was struggling with and always explained things calmly and patiently. She even contacted me when she was concerned about his low mood, which really showed how much she genuinely cared about him as a person, not just his maths.
